Geis opens a new central hub in Slovakia
Bad Neustadt / Zvolen, 19 February 2013. The internationally-active Geis Group has considerably strengthened its network in Eastern Europe. The logistics service provider has just opened a new central hub in Zvolen in central Slovakia. Covering an area of around 8,000 square metres, the facility houses a cargo hub and a transshipment hall for parcel consignments. Geis has invested a total of around seven million euros in the new building.
“We have experienced strong growth in Slovakia in recent years”, say Managing Partners Hans-Georg Geis and Wolfgang Geis. “Volumes have grown steadily and we have continuously adapted our existing national network to them. But it was time that we responded fully to our growth with an all-new combined hub.”
„As an all-in-one cargo-shipment distribution centre and parcel-handling facility the hub creates practical synergies: At the customer’s premises, all consignments are processed together. Only within its own system does Geis then divide consignments into parcel and pallet consignments. This saves the customer time and storage and handling area, and he gets two services from the same provider.
80 employees ensure that everything runs smoothly in the hub. General cargo handling is carried out on an area measuring around 5,000 square metres. Pallet consignments are transported using a fully-automatic conveyor chain system, and just under 50 gates with hydraulic bridges are available for goods-inwards and goods-outwards. The 3,000-m2-large parcel handling facility has nearly 100 gates. It will be equipped with a two-storey, two-strand sorting system that automatically directs parcels into the right channels.
Other features include a state-of-the-art IP video surveillance system that detects the movements of all consignments and covers the entire outdoor area, and a service station located directly on the 30,000 square metres site, enabling Geis trucks and the vehicles of our partners to be flexibly refuelled without long waiting times.
The facility replaces the previous hub in Banská Bystrica, just 20 kilometres away. It will therefore continue to benefit from a central location in the heart of Slovakia. A dense network of roads connects Zvolen with the surrounding towns and cities, and it is an important transportation hub between the capital Bratislava in the west and the second largest city, Košice, in the east. Slia─Ź Airport is also nearby. The head offices of Geis SK s.r.o. and Geis Parcel SK s.r.o. have also moved from Banská Bystrica to Zvolen.
